The European Commission is set to unveil a plan to improve high-speed rail connectivity across Europe in the coming months. This was stated by the European Commissioner for Transport, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, in an interview, reports Baltimore Chronicle, citing the The Guardian. The main goal of the plan is to make train travel competitive with air transportation in terms of comfort, speed, and cost.
The Commissioner emphasized that it is crucial for Europe to not only make train travel environmentally appealing but also more accessible to people. According to him, the plan will involve upgrading infrastructure to ensure a high level of comfort for passengers. A key part of this initiative is the development of a high-speed rail network that will compete with air travel in terms of travel time and cost, while maintaining its ecological benefits and convenience.
“We want people to choose trains not just because they are more environmentally friendly, but because they are a convenient, fast, and affordable way to travel long distances across Europe. This is our strategic direction for the coming years,” said Apostolos Tzitzikostas.
The European Commission’s plan, according to the Commissioner, will mark a significant step towards integrating the European transport space, where rail transport will play a vital role in reducing CO2 emissions and ensuring sustainable development.
