Red Cross blood donation efforts are intensifying as fall begins across Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and the Delmarva region. The American Red Cross says hospitals need donors of every blood type to maintain a reliable supply, as reported by Baltimore Chronicle. The appeal comes as September places renewed attention on emergency preparedness and blood availability.

Why the Red Cross is seeking more blood donors
The Red Cross supplies hospitals nationwide with more than 6.5 million blood products every year. Those products depend on volunteer donors.
September is also National Preparedness Month. The organization says a strong blood supply helps hospitals respond when disasters and other emergencies occur.
Blood cannot simply be stockpiled indefinitely. Regular appointments remain necessary as supplies are used for routine and emergency patient care.
The current appeal covers both blood and platelet donations. All blood types are needed.
Donors can receive a $15 e-gift card
People who donate blood or platelets between Sept. 21 and Oct. 18, 2026, can receive a $15 e-gift card. Donors can select a participating merchant of their choice.
The Red Cross is also running a shorter promotion at participating donation centers:
- Donate between Sept. 21 and Sept. 30.
- Visit a participating Red Cross blood donation center.
- Mention the word “pickleball” to staff or volunteers.
- Receive a custom Red Cross pickleball paddle and ball while supplies last.
The pickleball offer applies at participating Red Cross donation centers and is subject to availability. Donors should check the official Red Cross information before traveling.
What donors need to bring
The check-in requirements remain straightforward.

A donor card is therefore not the only option. People can use a driver’s license or 2 other accepted forms of identification.
Appointments can be arranged through the Red Cross Blood Donor App, online, or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS. The organization recommends scheduling ahead as it works to keep supplies stable through the fall.
