The rise in prices is observed exclusively in the high-quality product segment.
This week, producers in Ukraine raised prices for onions. One of the reasons for this situation was a noticeable increase in demand for this vegetable.
This was reported by analysts of the EastFruit project.
Experts noted that the supply of high-quality onions on the market is quite limited, since many farms continue to refrain from selling this product from storage facilities. Thus, price growth is observed exclusively in the segment of high-quality products, when the supply of medium and low-quality vegetables has noticeably decreased.
Thus, on November 28, Ukrainian farms sold high-quality onions at 12-17 UAH/kg ($ 0.29-0.41/kg), which is on average 35% more expensive than at the end of last week.
Analysts emphasized that now onion prices in Ukraine already exceed the indicators of the same period in 2023 by an average of 16%.
According to analysts, this situation is somewhat artificial and is due to the fact that many farms simply refuse to sell at current prices, thereby creating an even more significant shortage of these vegetables on the market.
Experts added that if we compare the situation on the onion market with other countries in the region, then by the end of the current week it is in Ukraine that this vegetable may top the rating for the highest prices.
“If this trend on the market strengthens, then onion imports to Ukraine this season may begin earlier than the traditional dates,” the experts added.
Earlier it became known that the price of greenhouse cucumbers has been rising in Ukraine for four weeks in a row. One of the reasons for this situation was a significant reduction in the supply of cucumbers from local farms.
