This week, carrots have become 10% cheaper.
Prices for carrots in Ukraine have begun to decline, but the quality of the product is a concern. Producers note that the percentage of rejects has increased significantly compared to last year due to unfavorable weather conditions.
This is reported by analysts of the EastFruit project.
Only at the beginning of this week, carrots fell in price by 10%, now their price fluctuates between 23-30 UAH/kg ($0.54-0.71/kg), depending on the quality. Producers are forced to raise prices, even despite the limited amount of quality carrots.
Demand for medium and low quality carrots in Ukraine remains low, which significantly restrains prices. Wholesale companies and retail chains purchase the vegetable only in small quantities due to weak demand. In addition, the quality of carrots has significantly deteriorated due to unfavorable weather conditions that affected their growth and harvesting.
“Starting from the second summer month of 2024, dry hot weather set in in Ukraine, which did not allow the normal development of crops. Last fall, due to precipitation during harvesting, farmers were forced to store products with high humidity,” the report says.
Despite the decline in carrot prices, the cost of the vegetable in Ukraine is still 2.2 times higher compared to mid-January 2024.
