Ukraine asks for $300 billion in military aid: what the US is saying

Whether Washington will decide in favor of Kyiv is still unknown.

Ukraine has asked the administration of US President Donald Trump to allow the use of frozen Russian assets worth $300 billion to purchase American weapons.

Bloomberg reports this, citing European officials familiar with the situation.

According to the publication, the idea was discussed at meetings between representatives of Ukraine, its allies and American officials. One of the sources claims that the proposal was even directly voiced to Donald Trump, but “there is no indication that the US president supports this idea.”

Russian assets have been frozen since the start of a full-scale invasion in 2022. They are stored in the Euroclear clearing house in Europe.

Previously, the G7 and the EU used only the proceeds from sanctioned assets to provide Ukraine with $50 billion in loans. Some European countries have again raised the issue of full asset confiscation, but there is no unified position in Europe.

In particular, Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium are against confiscation, as it could affect financial stability and create legal risks.

Moscow has already stated that it will take tough measures in the event of confiscation of frozen assets. According to Russian media, the Kremlin has developed a procedure for seizing foreign property on Russian territory.

Despite the risks, Ukrainian officials believe that using these funds is a logical solution. After all, Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that Ukraine itself should pay for US military aid.

Lawyers also note that Russian assets can be counted as future compensation for losses that Russia must compensate Ukraine.

Recall that President Donald Trump has turned three years of US policy on Ukraine upside down by declaring that he and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin have agreed to begin negotiations to end the war.
