What is known
The vaccine will be withdrawn all over the world, the publication writes. It can no longer be used in the European Union after AstraZeneca voluntarily revoked its marketing authorization. The application to withdraw the vaccine was submitted on March 5 and came into force on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.
Similar applications will be filed in the coming months not only in the EU, but also in the UK and other countries that have approved the vaccine , known as Vaxzevria.
What is the reason
At the same time, the pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca assures that the decision to withdraw the vaccine from the markets is purely commercial. After all, the Vaxzevria vaccine is no longer produced or supplied: it has been replaced by updated and safer vaccines that fight new variants of COVID-19.
Background
The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine faces accusations of that can provoke the development of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia (TTS), a condition in which the level of platelets in the blood decreases and blood clots form, which can lead to serious complications.
On April 30, 2024, it became known that AstraZeneca has admitted in court for the first time that its vaccine may actually cause this rare but hypothetically fatal side effect.
