The global box office of Despicable Me 4, released on July 3, exceeded $437 million. This result allowed the Illumination studio series to become the first animated franchise with a total box office of $5 billion, Variety reports.

The first Despicable Me cartoon was released in 2010. The main character of the franchise is the former supervillain Gru, who over the course of the series becomes a secret agent in the service of the government and the adoptive father of three girls: Margot, Edith and Agnes. In all his adventures he is helped by minions – small funny yellow creatures who communicate in their own language. The Despicable Me film grossed $543 million in theaters around the world against a budget of $69 million.
After the release of the first film about Gru and his family, the franchise received several prequels and sequels. Currently, the series includes six full-length cartoons – “Despicable Me” (2010), “Despicable Me 2” (2013), “Minions” (2015), “Despicable Me 3” (2017), “Minions: Gruvitation” (2022) ) and Despicable Me 4 (2024).
In addition, 18 short cartoons were released within the franchise. Earlier in July, the Illumination studio announced that it was developing the animated film Minions 3, which is scheduled for release in 2027.
