How the rules for Ukrainian refugees will change
The Hungarian government has adopted changes to legislation according to which assistance with housing for Ukrainian refugees will be provided depending on the region where they are from arrived or where their permanent place of residence is.
From August 21, only Ukrainians who arrived from the territories of Ukraine that the Hungarian government recognized as affected by the war will have the right to receive subsidized housing under any circumstances.
In particular, in July the list of such areas included:
- minors (under 18 years of age); one of the parents of a child under 18 years of age when living in the same family with him; pregnant women, people with disabilities; people over 65 years of age.
It is noted that after August 21, 2024, home owners will not receive government subsidies for the accommodation of other categories of refugees, so people may be asked to move out.
The government will not provide alternative accommodation options (such as government group shelters). However, those working in Hungary will be able to receive support from their employer.
