The funds will be used to expand the capabilities of two data centers located in Tokyo and Osaka. The new plan is in addition to the 1.51 trillion yen invested in Japan from 2011 to 2022.

The move comes as a push for the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) among Japanese companies following the rapid popularity of ChatGPT, a chatbot based on AI developed by the American company OpenAI.

Among the technology companies in Japan, NEC Corp. released a generative artificial intelligence platform for enterprise clients in July last year, while Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. said it would launch a generative AI platform for businesses in March.

Amazon also launched Amazon Q, an artificial intelligence service for enterprise clients that can summarize text and offer business advice using their internal data.

The Ministry of Finance wrote that Amazon will increase its investments in India to $26 billion by 2030, adding another $6.5 billion.
