Lithuania will begin to confiscate cars with Russian license plates

In Lithuania, owners of cars with Russian license plates must register their vehicles before March 11 or leave the territory of the country and the European Union. This was reported by the press service of the Lithuanian Customs.

According to Lithuanian customs, there are still people on the territory of Lithuania driving cars registered in Russia.

“Until March 11, they must either register vehicles in Lithuania or leave the EU. From March 11, persons who have cars with Russian license plates will be considered to have violated the provisions of the law and will be held accountable under Article 515 of the Code of Administrative Offenses, which provides for a fine and confiscation of the car,” the message says.

Reason “deadline”

The customs service noted that Lithuania is implementing the Council of Europe Regulations. 833/2014, sanctions requirements that allowed cars entering the EU to be registered until December 19, 2023.

From March 11, 2024, cars registered in Russia cannot be located on the territory of Lithuania or must still undergo re-registration .

Exception

The exception applies to Russian citizens traveling in transit to or from the Kaliningrad region on vehicles registered in the Russian Federation using a simplified travel document.

< p>Such transit through the territory of Lithuania cannot last longer than 24 hours. During transit, the vehicle must be accompanied by its owner. If the owner is not in the car, the vehicle will not be allowed into Lithuania.
