North Korean hackers stole $600 million worth of cryptocurrencies in 2023 – study

Last year, North Korean hackers stole $600 million in cryptocurrency. Perhaps this amount will rise to $700 million if the origin of the last two hacker attacks in 2023 is confirmed. This became known from a new study by TRM Labs, writes Delo.

Over the year, the rate of global cybercrime in the DPRK fell by 30%, since in 2022 the theft rate amounted to $850 million.

“North Korea is still responsible for almost a third of all funds that were stolen from crypto accounts in 2023,” say TRM Labs.

According to analysts, North Korea carries out hacking, which is on average ten times more costly than attacks linked to other countries. Overall, Pyongyang hackers have stolen nearly $3 billion worth of cryptocurrencies since 2017.

“North Korea conducts almost all of its attacks by compromising private keys and seed phrases, which are critical security elements of digital wallets. Hackers transfer victims' digital assets to wallet addresses controlled by North Korean operatives. currency with the help of over-the-counter brokers,” explains TRM Labs.
