The bill will now be returned for final approval by the full Senate, next plenary week, which begins on March 19.

Since this bill has previously gone through the same three-step path in the House of Commons, after the final approval by the Senate to enter into force, he will only need to obtain the signature of the Governor General.

Recall

The original Free Trade Agreement between Canada and Ukraine came into force on August 1, 2017 and allowed mutual repeal or reduce import duties on most goods.

Last September, during a visit to Ottawa, President Vladimir Zelensky, together with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, signed an updated Agreement, which now also covers trade in services, and not just goods, investments, telecommunications and other promising areas.

At the end of 2021, trade turnover between Canada and Ukraine reached a record level, approaching $350 million. In 2022, it decreased slightly due to factors mainly related to the start of a full-scale invasion RF.
