« On the evening of January 1, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin was hospitalized at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center due to complications from a recently scheduled medical procedure, said Pentagon Press Secretary Major General Pat Ryder.
It is also clarified that while the head of the Pentagon was in the hospital, his duties were performed by Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks.
