The village of Nizhnyaya Apsha in the Transcarpathian region, which is located two kilometers from the border with Romania, is considered the richest settlement in Ukraine. The settlement became famous for its huge number of rich estates, amazing in scale and luxury.
Estates in Nizhnyaya Apsha began to be built in the 1980s. At that time, Ukrainian Romanians en masse went to work abroad. And they earned their very first capital in the early 90s by selling alcohol. People came to the village from all over Ukraine to buy it and exported hundreds of liters abroad.
Local residents are guided by the rule: “My house must be at least one brick higher than the neighbor’s.” However, to build and maintain such houses, you need a lot of money. Therefore, a significant part of local residents spend most of their time working in Europe, and rent out their houses to tourists or new villagers.
Since such large palace houses are very expensive to heat in winter, the owners live in only one or two rooms , and the rest are kept closed. It often happens that a family remains to live in an old house in the courtyard, and only guests are accepted in the new luxurious estate.
