Pigeons are one of the most common birds in cities, but it is almost impossible to see their chicks.
This was reported by URA-Inform with reference to T4.
The reason lies in the choice of nesting sites: pigeons prefer secluded places similar to rocks and caves, which is associated with their origin from ancestors who lived near the Mediterranean Sea. In cities, pigeons build nests under roofs, windowsills or bridges, where their chicks are hidden from view.
In addition, , the pigeon chicks remain in the nest for four to six weeks until they grow up and get stronger. Pigeons show themselves to be caring parents: both parents feed the offspring, and if one dies, the other takes on all responsibilities.
When young pigeons leave the nest, they join neighboring flocks, settling in familiar territory. Pigeon chicks look unusual: they have almost no feathers, and their skin is pinkish and translucent. Young pigeons can be recognized among adults by the small amount of down remaining on the back of their heads.
