In Bolivian In the city of El Alto, hundreds of houses located on the edge of steep earthen cliffs have been dubbed “suicide houses” due to the high risk of devastating landslides.
This was reported by URA-Inform with reference to on Reuters.
The buildings are located on Avenida Panoramica and in the La Ceja district, one of the city's busiest commercial centers. Their precarious location on slopes vulnerable to collapse is a concern, especially given the heavy rains that have increased the risk of landslides in recent weeks.
Despite the obvious danger, the residents of these houses, including Yatiri shamans and traders, refuse to move. For them, these structures have not only practical but also cultural significance. Many say they have no intention of leaving their homes and places of work, even though they are aware of the danger. Surprisingly, locals are willing to risk their lives to preserve their houses, which are built of brick and covered with corrugated iron sheets.
Local authorities warn that further collapse is inevitable and are pushing for evacuations to keep people safe. But stabilizing the slopes is extremely difficult and expensive. At the same time, some residents, especially the Yatiri, believe they can avert disaster by making offerings to Pachamama, the earth goddess revered by indigenous Andean peoples.
«We can do a sacrifice ceremony, we do it as payment, and in this way the earth will never move, because Pachamama needs sacrifice,» one shaman said. «It's like giving food, and then this place will not move. On the contrary, it is stabilizing».
