President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky called the termination of Russian gas transit through Ukraine one of Russia's biggest defeats.
URA-Inform reports this with reference to RBC-Ukraine.
Just 25 years ago, the volumes of gas pumped gas through Ukrainian territory exceeded 130 billion cubic meters annually. Today this figure is zero. This event reflects the strategic failure of the Kremlin's energy policy.
“This is a historic event that proves our ability to minimize Europe’s dependence on Russian energy,” Zelensky said.
The president also called on the United States to increase gas supplies to Europe to finally eliminate the region's energy vulnerability. Ukraine is actively developing its gas transportation system to provide alternative supply routes.
For Russia, this step was a strategic failure, indicating a decline in its influence in the international arena. The decline in revenues from gas exports is a serious blow to the country's economy, which is depends largely on the sale of energy resources.
Ukraine is strengthening its position as a reliable partner of the West, capable of adapting to new economic and political challenges. This victory is an important step towards energy independence for Europe.
Meanwhile, Zelensky has a new “title” in the US.
