However, a recent explanation of marine biology has somewhat changed the usual idea of beaches, URA-Inform reports.

According to them, white sand is usually formed from crushed shells and skeletons of sea creatures that are washed up on the coast by natural processes. But that's not all.

The biggest surprise was caused by the information about the parrot fish – a bright tropical inhabitant of coral reefs. It turns out that it is one of the main “producers” of white sand. The fish feeds on corals, grinds their skeletons, and then … excretes it in the form of fine white sand, which the current brings to the beaches.

While brown sand is formed by the erosion of rocks, white sand is mainly the product of marine life. Waves and time only complete this natural process.

While it may not sound like much, white sand is completely natural and safe, and is evidence of a healthy marine ecosystem. And the next time you walk barefoot on a tropical beach, remember with a smile: what seems perfect often has a completely unexpected origin.
