It has become known from whom a person can become infected with the «zombie virus»: this is a disease that leads to serious neurodegenerative disorder, can have dire consequences.

This information was reported by T4, URA-Inform reports.

For the first time in the history of medical science, deer are suspected of transmitting the “zombie virus” to humans, officially known as chronic wasting disease (CWD). According to a report published by medical researchers in Texas, two cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease have been identified in hunters who likely consumed meat from deer infected with the zombie virus.

It is a rare and rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disease. the disease is known for its mortality and lack of treatment associated with contaminated prions — infectious proteins that destroy the brain.

It is noted that one of the patients, a 72-year-old man, contacted doctors with complaints of confusion and aggression, which are typical symptoms of the disease. He had previously eaten deer meat that had CWD. His friend, who also ate meat from this population of deer, died of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Doctors determined that the patient's condition worsened despite treatment, and he died a month after the onset of symptoms. Post-mortem testing confirmed that he was diagnosed with a sporadic form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease with homozygous amino acid methionine.

Researchers note that it is difficult to distinguish clinical cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease caused by common causes from possible cases associated with CWD , without a detailed analysis of the prion, which is an infectious agent. For this reason, preliminary findings about disease transmission from deer to humans remain speculative, but these reports encourage further research in this area.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines chronic wasting disease as a prion disease that specifically affects deer, elk and caribou. The disease causes abnormal folding of proteins in the brain, leading to neurodegeneration. The peculiarity of CWD lies in its ability to quickly spread through a population of wild animals due to contact with biological fluids and contaminated environments.

It is important to note that scientists are actively studying the possibility of these prions crossing the species barrier, since in the history of medicine there have already been cases where similar diseases passed from animals to people. The most famous example is variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, caused by the consumption of contaminated meat in the UK during the mad cow disease epidemic in the 1990s. About 200 people died then.
