In Ukraine, the demographic crisis threatens mobilization.

It is noted that men liable for military service are aged from 18 to 30 years — these are representatives of the smallest generation in the entire history of the country's independence.
As the publication notes, about a million men who are currently serving in the Ukrainian army are exhausted, because many soldiers have been on combat duty for two years, so the army needs new ones recruits. But the army was faced with the problem of a demographic crisis, which began in the country back in the 1990s.
«In the 1990s, savings disappeared and wages depreciated during the economic crisis. Uncertainty and uncertainty about the future hung in the air, which affected the reproductive behavior of the population», — said Deputy Director of the Mikhail Ptukha Institute of Demography and Social Research Alexander Gladun.
According to the publication, as of 2024, the birth rate in Ukraine has almost halved. Among the main reasons — departure of about 800 thousand women aged 18 to 34 years to the countries of the European Union. So far, the absence of women plays a larger role in Ukrainian demography than the recruitment of men.
It is worth noting that a demographic crisis was also observed in the Russian Federation, but its population is four times larger, and this provides a larger number of men for mobilization .
«The outlook for fertility now depends on both factors: how many men will die in the war and how many women will return from Europe. But Ukraine has no other choice but to draft young people into an exhausted army», — says Gladun.
The New York Times also adds that the mobilization age of 25 years in Ukraine remains high compared to other European countries and the United States of America, where men can be drafted into the army from the age of 18.
