Oral diseases can lead to a heart attack: a doctor explains

Twitter LinkedIn

Heart attacks happen when the artery that supplies the heart with blood and oxygen becomes blocked.

This information was reported to Ua-novosti, URA-Inform reports.

Usually this occurs due to the accumulation of fatty plaques – cholesterol. It turned out that diseases of the oral cavity can also increase the risk of a heart attack.

Gum disease or periodontitis can lead to heart problems, since the accumulation of «bad» bacteria in the mouth can enter the bloodstream and cause inflammation of the blood vessels.

With these diseases, a special plaque forms on the teeth, consisting of fat, cholesterol, calcium and other substances that can accumulate inside the arteries. This fatty deposit is what triggers the development of heart disease and attack.

Typically, symptoms of gum disease include:

— bad breath;

— inflammation of the gums;

— loss of teeth.

There are other non-obvious symptoms of a heart attack that are important to pay attention to, experts say.

These include:

— jaw pain;

— sour taste in the mouth;

— indigestion;

— sweating for no apparent reason;

— nausea;

— unusual fatigue;

— shortness of breath.

Doctors remind that to reduce the risk of a heart attack, you need to maintain a healthy lifestyle, give up bad habits, and play sports. It is also important to monitor cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
