Every year, lightning injures and kills about 250,000 people around the world.

This information was reported by T4, URA-Inform reports.

The basic ingredients of a thunderstorm are warm, moist air near the ground, colder, drier air above it, and a way for the warm, moist air to rise. Almost anywhere these ingredients are found, lightning can strike.

To create the maps, scientists relied on data from the National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN). This is a series of antennas located throughout the country. It uses radio waves created by lightning strikes to track their progress. The system detects at least 97% of cloud-to-ground lightning strikes in the country and distinguishes these strikes from flashes inside clouds.

Statistics show that it occurs most often along the Gulf Coast, where most summer days sea breezes contribute to the formation of thunderstorms.

The hottest spot for cloud-to-ground lightning strikes is Florida in the United States, scientists say. In fact, in the Fort Lauderdale area of Miami alone, lightning struck more than 120,000 times in 2023.

Recall that it was previously reported that “rivers” were found in the Earth’s atmosphere: scientists spoke about a strange phenomenon in the sky.
