What musical taste says about a person: researchers emphasized that a playlist can become a kind of mirror of personality, reflecting the characteristics of an individual through the choice of genres music, as well as performers.

< p>As part of this study, a hypothesis was identified that preferences in music are determined by the specificity of information processing in the human brain. During the analysis, two strategies for perceiving music were identified:

  • empathic approach: people in this category prefer soft and emotionally rich music. They are more likely to choose indie rock, country or folk, as these genres can evoke deep emotional reactions in them;
  • Systemic approach: This strategy attracts people to music with significant structural complexity, such as classical music or jazz. They prefer compositions that require deep understanding and are dynamic.

What else has been done?

Further research is aimed at identifying the relationship between personality characteristics and musical preferences. The researchers recruited participants from different cultural backgrounds and conducted a survey using the Big Five method, including assessments of extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, conscientiousness and emotional stability.

The results of the study confirmed the existence of a link between personality and music preferences, indicating the importance of individual differences:

  • pop music fans tend to be hardworking, honest and have a high self-esteem, but their creativity may be less pronounced compared to fans of other genres;
  • fans of rap and hip-hop, despite stereotypes, they turn out to be socially oriented and have high self-esteem;
  • fans of country music most often characterize themselves as hardworking, friendly and conservative, while they are emotionally stable, but not always ready for new ideas;
  • fans of rock and metal are often soft, creative and introverted individuals who prefer loneliness and have low self-esteem;
  • fans of classical music are often creative and prone to introversion;
  • Jazz lovers tend to be creative extroverts, open to new experiences and have high self-esteem.

The study also confirmed that music is often used as a means of self-expression, helping people find like-minded people based on common values ​​and musical preferences. Thus, the researchers were able to answer the question of what musical taste says about a person.
