Giant Food Nottingham store will close August 6 after nearly 50 years, with prescriptions transferred and employees offered new positions.

Giant Food Nottingham store will permanently close on August 6, ending nearly 50 years of service on Belair Road, as the Baltimore Chronicle editorial team notes. The supermarket operates inside Putty Hill Plaza at 7920-30 Belair Road.

Why the Giant Food Nottingham store is closing

Giant Food confirmed the closure after reviewing its business performance and the surrounding retail market. The company did not disclose specific sales figures or financial results.

A spokesperson said nearby stores can continue serving customers from Nottingham and Overlea. Shoppers can also use Giant Pickup and home delivery services.

The supermarket will close at 6 p.m. on its final operating day. The date and closing time were also reported by The Baltimore Banner.

The closure affects several customer services:

  • Grocery shopping at the Putty Hill Plaza location will end August 6.
  • Pharmacy prescriptions will move to nearby Giant Food pharmacies.
  • Customers may select another Giant pharmacy for their prescriptions.
  • Employees will receive opportunities to transfer to other stores.

Giant Food said it will support workers during the transition. The company also thanked Baltimore County residents for decades of support.

What pharmacy customers need to know

Pharmacy customers will receive notices explaining where their prescriptions are being transferred. The default location will depend on each customer’s home address.

Customers are not required to accept the selected pharmacy. They can request a transfer to another Giant Food location.

Another Giant Food closure near Baltimore

The Nottingham shutdown follows other Giant Food closures across the Baltimore region. The Edmondson Village store closed in 2024 after failing to meet sales targets.

LA Mart later replaced that supermarket. Aldi has also announced plans for the Edmondson Village Shopping Center.

Another former Giant location near New Town High School has remained vacant since 2019. No permanent replacement has been announced.

The Nottingham closure leaves shoppers dependent on nearby Giant stores, competing supermarkets and online grocery services. Giant Food says it remains committed to serving the area.
