We plan to purchase at least 1 million FPV drones in 2024, – plans to purchase at least 1 million FPV drones in 2024. The first batches have already been ordered.

Defense Minister Rustem Umerov wrote about this in a column for Ukrinform.

“In general, the state plans to purchase at least a million drones in 2024. It is important that for the first time, the total real need of the army for drones has been clearly calculated and summarized. We are working on efficient logistics, on reducing the cost of purchasing, and on producing a sufficient number of combat units,” he noted. /p>

Umerov also emphasized that previously there were no clear criteria and rules for the use of FPV drones on the battlefield at the legislative level. Therefore, the Ministry of Defense did not purchase them.

This is a war of intellects: how FPV strike drones fight near Bakhmut and Kleshchievka

Previously, FPV drones were purchased by volunteers, the Ministry of Digital Development and regional military administrations. And for 2024, the Ministry of Defense for the first time formed a coordinated need at the level of the Defense Forces.

“Previously, each security department formed its own need for the year, which sometimes contradicted or duplicated each other. The Ministry of Defense led and systematized this process. The need is not only formed, but also coordinated with the real capacities of Ukrainian manufacturers, their scaling plans, opportunities to purchase abroad and plans for the supply of military-technical assistance from partners,” Umerov wrote.

What is an FPV drone and why are they important

 • FPV (First Person View) is a type of unmanned aerial vehicle that is controlled from the first person. The pilot, thanks to the remote control and glasses, can quickly maneuver and find the enemy target. Such devices can be used for many purposes: both defeating infantry and repelling an assault and neutralizing heavy armored vehicles.
 • FPVs have a relatively low price, approximately $600, and are capable of disabling or even destroying enemy equipment worth millions.
