“The number of universities will be reduced in Ukraine due to a reduction in the number of applicants,” Deputy Minister of Education

<p>Considering the annual reduction in the number of school graduates, there should be a reduction in the number or consolidation of higher education institutions.</p>
<p>Deputy Minister of Education and Science Mikhail Vinnitsky stated this in an interview with The Ukrainians.</p>
<p> “Already now “A bill has been developed on the prerequisites for modernizing the network of higher education institutions. In fact, this is a bill not only about reducing the number of universities, but also about improving their quality,” Vinnitsky noted.</p>
<p>He said that last year there were about 360 thousand school graduates in Ukraine, while in 2008 this number reached 640 thousand.</p>
<p>“Further forecasts are also disappointing. Based only on demographics, which does not take into account indicators war-related migration, we see a constant decrease in the number of people born on the territory of Ukraine 17 years ago. By 2033, we will have approximately 300 thousand graduates – and this is a figure that provides for the return of territories not yet controlled by Ukraine,” Vinnitsky added. </p>

As for universities, according to him, in 2008 there were about 350 educational institutions in Ukraine, with an average of 6 ,7 thousand students. We are trying to do this smoothly, without creating unnecessary social tension,” Vinnitsky said.

According to him, today in Ukraine, in addition to 100 private institutions of higher education and 40 municipal ones, there are almost 170 state universities, and this does not take into account branches, and as a result of the reform, about 100 should remain.
