Before the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Klimenko served in annexed Crimea, and received the rank of major general in May 2024.
In August 2024, Astra published an investigation into the military of the 5th Brigade. They allegedly organized torture in the Petrovskaya mine on the western outskirts of Donetsk for their soldiers. In particular, they questioned the “military” and propagandist Russell Bentley to death.
