On February 5, several important events are celebrated in Ukraine and the world. One of the main church holidays is the day of memory of the martyr Agathia, who lived in the 3rd century in Sicily and died because of her devotion to the Christian faith. She refused to renounce her faith and marry a Roman ruler, for which she was subjected to cruel torture and died a martyr's death. She is revered as the patron saint of the sick, especially those suffering from chest diseases. In the Christian world, her name is associated with courage and devotion to faith, writes IZ.
In folk tradition, this day is accompanied by numerous signs related to the weather and harvest. It was believed that frosty weather heralded the imminent arrival of spring, and the lack of precipitation could indicate a poor summer. On this day, peasants prayed for the health of their livestock, and relatives of prisoners asked for their salvation. There were also certain prohibitions: one could not leave a mess behind, quarrel or show laziness, as this could negatively affect the whole year.
February 5 was remembered for many historical events. On this day in 1585, the Assumption Stauropegian Brotherhood was founded in Lviv, and in 1861, a patent for a cinematoscope was obtained in the USA. In 1924, the BBC first began broadcasting precise time signals, and in 1928, German chemist Adolf Windaus synthesized vitamin D. Also on February 5, 1952, New York became the first city in the world to use three-color traffic lights, and in 1992, Ukraine established diplomatic relations with Norway.
In addition, on this day, Ukraine celebrates the Day of the State Special Transport Service, which ensures the safety of infrastructure facilities and works on demining territories. Also today, World Read Aloud Day is celebrated, launched in 2010 to promote literacy and unite people through reading. It is supported in different countries around the world, emphasizing the importance of access to books and the development of reading skills for all age groups.
