What is celebrated on January 26: church calendar, signs and prohibitions

On January 26, the Orthodox Church commemorates the holy monks Xenophon and Maria, who lived in Byzantium. The couple was distinguished by their deep faith and love for God. Their sons Arkady and John went to study, but due to a shipwreck they ended up in a monastery and became monks. Years later, Xenophon and Maria accidentally met their sons during a pilgrimage to the shrines. This event changed their lives: they also took monastic tonsure and dedicated themselves to serving God, writes the IZ.com.ua website.

On this day, believers refrain from quarrels, swearing, and insults. It is forbidden to do housework, in particular cleaning or washing the floor, as this can disturb inner peace. It is also important to keep amulets that protect against evil forces. These prohibitions are aimed at maintaining spiritual peace and harmony.

Folk signs associated with this day helped to predict the weather. A starry sky promised a bountiful harvest, and a clear and quiet day – a warm spring. The singing of tits indicated a cooling, and a blizzard testified to the cold end of winter. The villagers also believed that the sound of falling peas predicted severe frosts in the near future.

The names of Maria, Arkady, John, Fedor, Semyon and Peter celebrate their names on this day. Those born on January 26th are suitable for jade as a talisman, which gives endurance and helps to find a way out of any difficulties.
