Bundestag Budget Committee Calls on Finance Ministry to Approve 3 Billion Euros for Ukraine

German Bundestag

Kukis' budget with a call to approve an additional three billion euros of military aid for Ukraine.

According to Reuters, during the vote in the committee, the initiative was supported by representatives of the opposition factions – the Christian Democratic Union and the Free Democrats party. The Social Democrats and the Greens, who were part of the coalition before it effectively collapsed, abstained.

Members of parliament do not have the authority to decide on foreign funding on their own and need the approval of the finance ministry. The government usually responds positively to such requests.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz had previously said that he supported an additional 3 billion euros in aid, but insisted that it could only be financed by waiving the current borrowing moratorium.

The German budget for 2025 includes 4 billion euros in military aid for Ukraine, half the amount provided in the previous year.
