Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky honored the memory of those who held back the Bolshevik advance on Kyiv on January 29, 1918. The ceremony took place at the memorial cross to the Kruty Heroes at Askold's Grave in Kyiv, the press service of the President's Office reports.

After the ceremony, the head of state spoke with the mother of the deceased Hero of Ukraine, fighter pilot Andrey Pilshchikov (call sign Dzhus) Liliya Averianova near the Church of St. Nicholas on Askold's Grave.

The President honored the memory of Andrei Pil'shchikov, as well as Mark Paslavsky, who died near Ilovaisk in August 2014; Alexander Klitinsky, a participant in the Revolution of Dignity who died during the fire in the House of Trade Unions in February 2014; Hero of Ukraine, commander of the assault battalion “Wolves of Da Vinci” Dmytro Kotsiubail (call sign Da Vinci), who died in March 2023 near Bakhmut, and public activist and soldier of the 59th separate assault brigade named after Yakiv Handzyuk Pavlo in April while carrying out a combat mission in Donbas.

The Heroes of Kruty are Ukrainian students and cadets who heroically held back the advance of the Bolshevik army on Kyiv on January 29, 1918 near the Kruty station. Despite the enemy's significant numerical advantage, they were able to hold back its advance, which enabled the Ukrainian government to conclude the Brest Peace. Many soldiers died, and the Bolsheviks shot some of the prisoners. This battle became a symbol of courage and self-sacrifice for the independence of Ukraine.
