The European Union is considering the possibility of introducing new norms in the field of migration policy, which provide for the deportation of persons who have been refused asylum, as well as foreigners who have been convicted of crimes. The document with proposals has already been sent to EU member states and was discussed at a meeting of interior ministers. The main initiator of the innovations is Poland, which insists on reviewing outdated mechanisms for controlling migration flows.
This is reported by IZ with reference to The Time.
As part of the initiative, the EU plans to review the provisions of the 1951 Geneva Convention, in particular the principle of non-refoulement, which makes it impossible to forcibly return people to countries where they are in danger. Polish diplomats note that current circumstances are different from those after World War II, so the old rules need to be adapted to new challenges. The document emphasizes that the current system does not provide for sufficiently broad criteria for refusing asylum, which significantly complicates control over migration processes.
The main reason for tightening the rules is the protracted migration crisis that has been going on since 2015 due to a massive influx of refugees from the Middle East and Africa. Many EU governments are concerned that some migrants are not integrating into local society, instead forming closed communities where traditions that contradict European norms may spread. The proposed changes include stricter requirements for asylum seekers, as well as accelerating the deportation procedure for those who do not meet the updated criteria.
Discussions on possible changes at the international level will continue in the near future. The new policy has already received support from the US and the UK, which also seek to strengthen measures against illegal migration. EU countries, faced with an increasing social burden due to the influx of migrants, are looking for effective mechanisms for regulating flows that take into account both human rights and the security of their own citizens.
Recall that we previously wrote that the US temporarily blocked programs for accepting migrants, including Ukrainians.
