Deployment of peacekeepers: what is known
European leaders are actively discussing the creation of a “coalition of the willing” that would include the military forces of several countries. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed that the possibility of deploying more than 10,000 troops is being considered, and the total number of troops could increase to 30,000.
Macron stressed that the military will be deployed in strategic locations in small groups. France and the UK see this format as a guarantee of Ukraine's security and a way to support the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the future.
Main tasks of the peacekeeping contingent
- Support for the ceasefire – if a peace agreement is signed, peacekeepers will ensure its observance.
- Military training of the Armed Forces of Ukraine – training of Ukrainian military personnel according to NATO standards.
- Preventing a new Russian offensive is a demonstration of the strategic presence of Western troops as a deterrent.
According to Macron, the contingent will not participate in combat operations, but will only coordinate training programs and support defense initiatives. At the same time, the Kremlin has no right to dictate conditions to Ukraine regarding the presence of foreign troops.
Which countries are ready to send peacekeepers?
France and the UK have initiated the mission, but other countries in Europe and around the world are expected to join in. According to The Times, the UK is prepared to provide a long-term deployment of troops to Ukraine for as long as necessary.
It is expected that the core of the peacekeeping mission will consist of military personnel from:
- Great Britain;
- France;
- Turkey;
- Canada;
- Australia.
A number of other countries are also ready to provide weapons, intelligence, and logistical support.
How long will the mission last?
According to British government sources, the mission could last for years. The main goal is not only to maintain a ceasefire, but also to create long-term mechanisms to deter Russian aggression.
At the same time, negotiations are ongoing on the “rules of engagement” – whether peacekeepers will have the right to open fire in case of threat. The UK insists on security guarantees from the US, but so far the Donald Trump administration has not given a clear answer.
It is expected that a meeting of the defense ministers of the countries participating in the mission will be held in London this week, where its format, size, and working mechanisms will be clarified.
