Prices for a number of goods from the United States may increase in Ukraine due to the introduction of new tariffs by the administration of President Donald Trump. This was announced by Yuriy Gaidai, a senior economist at the Center for Economic Strategy, on the air of a national telethon. According to him, the customs policy of the United States will affect world trade, and Ukraine will not remain aloof from these changes, IZ writes.
Gaidai drew attention to the fact that many American goods, including cars, are made from imported parts. “ Take American cars: up to 40–50% of their parts are imported. If we add new tariffs to this, the cost of such cars will increase. Accordingly, for us this will mean an increase in prices ,” the economist noted.
According to the expert, the price increase may also affect electronics, household appliances and other products entering the Ukrainian market from the USA. At the same time, he did not rule out that some goods from the USA may be reoriented to other markets, in particular the Ukrainian one. This will create the potential for price reductions in some categories, but the overall impact will be inflationary.
“ In most countries, with few exceptions, these changes will create additional upward pressure on prices ,” Gaidai stressed. He also added that the increase in tariffs in the United States could lead to changes in global supply chains, as well as aggravation of trade relations between countries.
The expert noted that Ukraine may feel the impact of these processes on two levels: as a country importing goods from the US and as a potential exporter that can take advantage of new market niches. Increasing tariffs will reduce the availability of American goods in many countries, which will open up space for competitive analogues, in particular Ukrainian production.
As a reminder, it was previously reported that Trump's new tariffs caused the dollar to collapse.
