In 2025, people named Yuri have the opportunity to celebrate their angel's day several times. According to the updated church calendar, the memory of Saint Yuri is honored on February 4, April 23 (one of the most revered days is the commemoration of the Great Martyr Yuri the Victorious), as well as on June 23, July 31, and November 26.
The Life of Saint George: An Example of Indomitable Spirit
Saint George the Victorious is one of the most famous saints in the Christian tradition. His image is often associated with courage, bravery, and loyalty to God. George was born in the 3rd century in what is now Lebanon into a pious Christian family. From a young age, he displayed extraordinary courage and sincere faith.
When he grew up, he joined the ranks of the Roman army. However, with the beginning of the persecution of Christians, Yuri did not renounce his faith – on the contrary, he courageously professed it even in the face of cruel torture and execution. His unbreakable steadfastness and devotion to Christ made him a symbol of spiritual strength. Therefore, Yuri is still revered as the patron saint of warriors, fighters for justice and all who stand guard over good.
Traditions of honoring Saint George in Ukraine
St. George's Day has been an important holiday in Ukrainian culture since ancient times. In different regions it was called differently: somewhere Yuriy, somewhere Yura, and in some places – Yuri's Day . Numerous customs and rituals are associated with this holiday, which have been passed down from generation to generation.
One of the most interesting traditions was feeding cattle with flowers, which were called ” yurochki “. It was believed that this brought generous milk yields. Cattle were driven out to pasture only after sunrise – it was believed that before that time evil spirits could cause harm. Before the pasture, they prayed to Saint Yuri, asking for protection and health for the animals.
Spring Yuri was considered the patron saint of warmth and fertility. They said: “ Yuri opens the earth – brings summer closer .” It was during this period that swallows – the messengers of spring – usually returned. Hence the folk sign: “ The swallow has flown – the thunder will not be long in coming .”
There were also certain prohibitions: one could not deal with wool – do not spin or knit, because, according to legend, wolves could attack the flock. Also, on this day one should not swear or quarrel – to avoid lightning and bad weather.
In Transcarpathia, young people celebrated this day with joy: they doused each other with water and decorated their homes with birch branches. It was believed that this brought renewal and purification.
