“We have taken note of the statement by US President Donald Trump. We want to give the negotiations a chance. While the EU countermeasures, which have received strong support from our member states, are being finalized, we will suspend them for 90 days,” von der Leyen said.
According to her, if negotiations with the US prove unsuccessful, the EU is ready to impose appropriate tariffs on American goods. “Preparatory work is underway on further countermeasures. But, as I said before, all options remain on the table,” she stressed.
Von der Leyen welcomed Trump’s decision to suspend reciprocal tariffs, calling it “an important step towards stabilising the global economy.” She stressed that clear and predictable conditions are critical for the functioning of international trade networks and supply chains.
“Tariffs are taxes that only harm businesses and consumers. That is why I have consistently advocated for a zero-for-zero tariff agreement between the European Union and the United States,” the European Commission President said.
She also stressed that the EU remains committed to constructive negotiations with the US to achieve unhindered and mutually beneficial trade. At the same time, Europe continues to diversify its trade partnerships, engaging with countries that account for 87% of world trade.
It was previously reported that the US and Russia arrived in Istanbul for talks on diplomatic missions, indicating an intensification of international dialogue on several fronts.
