It is noted that dismantling may take several days, since the structure is quite massive. It consists of approximately 20 elements weighing about 6,000 – 7,000 kg.

Preliminary experts examined the structure in order to maintain its integrity during dismantling and not damage it. In the future, the monument will be kept in the State Aviation Museum of Ukraine. A. K. Antonova.

The Arch of Friendship of Peoples was opened in 1982 in Khreshchaty Park in honor of the “reunification” of Ukraine with Russia. Construction lasted about four years and was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the founding of the USSR. The monument was opened on the eve of the anniversary of the October Revolution. The Arch of Nations consists of three elements: an arch in the form of a huge rainbow, a bronze sculpture of two workers (a Ukrainian and a Russian holding a ribbon with the Order of Friendship of Peoples at the top) and a granite sculpture with a scene of the Pereyaslav Council. Behind the monument there is an observation deck with a view of the Dnieper and its left bank.

The Pereyaslovsky Council in 1654 was convened by Hetman Bogdan Khmelnytsky. It provided for an agreement with Muscovy and the Cossacks’ oath of allegiance to the Tsar, who in return guaranteed the rights of the Ukrainian people.

  • In May 2022, the Kiev City Council decided to decommunize the name of the People's Friendship Arch. Now this is the Freedom Arch of the Ukrainian people. On April 26, the monument near the Arch was dismantled in Kyiv.
  • The Institute of National Memory believes that, despite the renaming, the Arch of Peoples' Friendship is subject to complete dismantling. The Kyiv City State Administration responded that the city would not dismantle the arch for now, and the space near it would receive a new concept.
  • In 2016, the then Minister of Culture Evgeniy Nishchuk proposed demolishing the People’s Friendship Arch, but In this place, a monument to ATO soldiers should be erected.
  • In 2015, the chief architect of Kyiv, Sergei Tselovalnik, also proposed demolishing the Arch of Peoples' Friendship. “What kind of friendship is this if Russian troops came to our land with tanks?” – he said.
