Joe Kent, Trump’s top counterterror adviser, resigns over Iran war, citing no imminent threat and personal loss, sparking high-profile dissent in the administration.

Joe Kent, the Trump administration’s top counterterrorism adviser, announced his resignation on Tuesday in a public statement opposing the ongoing war with Iran, reports Baltimore Chronicle via ABC News. Kent, who directed the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), is now the most prominent official to step down in protest over the conflict, which entered its third week.

In a detailed resignation letter shared on social media, Kent stated that he could not “in good conscience” continue supporting military operations against Iran. He emphasized that the nation faced “no imminent threat” and expressed concern that the decision to go to war was influenced by Israel and its American lobby. Kent highlighted his extensive experience as a combat veteran, having served over 20 years in the U.S. Army and completing 11 combat deployments across the Middle East.

The NCTC, which operates under the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), plays a central role in coordinating U.S. counterterrorism and counternarcotics efforts. According to Kent’s official biography, he served as the principal counterterrorism adviser to the president. ABC News has contacted both the White House and Israeli officials for further comment.

Kent’s decision also reflected a deeply personal dimension. He is a Gold Star husband; his late wife, Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer Shannon Kent, was killed in a suicide bombing while deployed in Syria in 2019. In his resignation letter, he wrote, “As a veteran who deployed to combat 11 times and as a Gold Star husband who lost my beloved wife Shannon in a war manufactured by Israel, I cannot support sending the next generation off to fight and die in a war that serves no benefit to the American people nor justifies the cost of American lives.”

The resignation of Joe Kent marks a significant moment of dissent within the Trump administration, highlighting the controversy surrounding the rationale and execution of the Iran conflict.
