The mayor's adviser does not rule out that the incident could have been caused by friendly fire from the “liberators.” At the same time, Russian public pages write that a Russian Armed Forces fighter was shot down while approaching Mariupol.
Later, Andryushchenko clarified that either a plane of the “second army of the world” or an aircraft-type drone, but the size of an airplane, could have fallen . The official added that the air target was shot down on the way back from Donetsk towards Primorsko-Akhtarsk.
