As NBN reports with reference to the material from Espresso, the statement was made by the MP of the Servant of the People faction Olha Vasilevska-Smaglyuk – in accordance with the norms of the above-described document, excise rates will be “tied” to the euro exchange rate, and a pack of cigarettes will go up in price by tens of hryvnias from January 2025.
Based on Vasilevska-Smaglyuk's words, the approval of this law is the implementation of the European directive, that is, the fulfillment of Brussels' requirements before Ukraine's accession in the European Union. In particular, in the EU excise rates and the cost of tobacco products depend on the euro, and starting next year, the estimated price of each pack of cigarettes will increase by 40 hryvnia.
The people's representative added that such a sharp increase in excise taxes on tobacco products will allow the state budget to be filled more intensively:
We expect that through the implementation of this law, the state budget will receive about 20 billion hryvnia.
