Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered his first statement in Ottawa following his Liberal Party’s victory in the parliamentary elections. In his address, he announced the end of the traditional model of relations with the United States, which had been based on gradual integration and open global trade, reports the Baltimore Chronicle, citing Reuters.
Carney stated that the system Canada had relied on since World War II is no longer functioning. He described the situation as a “tragedy” but emphasized that it represents a new reality the country must adapt to. According to the Prime Minister, the coming months will be challenging and will require sacrifices.
The backdrop for this statement includes tense relations between Canada and the U.S., particularly due to comments from President Donald Trump suggesting Canada could become the “51st state,” and the trade war he initiated.
