Kyiv will no longer name streets in honor of fallen soldiers. WomanEL tells why the city authorities of the capital are changing their approach to commemorating fallen heroes.
The decision was made after the number of initiatives to rename streets in honor of fallen defenders increased significantly. Also, one of the reasons was the conflicts that arose between the families of the fallen when one street was to bear the names of several soldiers.

Viktoria Mukha, a member of the Kyiv City Council and head of the standing committee on culture, tourism and public communications, explained that in the current situation it is necessary to rethink the ways of perpetuating the memory of the dead.
Since the beginning of the war, 59 streets, squares and alleys in the capital have been renamed in honor of heroes. Among them are such famous names as Maksym Kryvtsov, Mykola Kravchenko, Oleg Mudrak, Oleksandr Makhov and others. However, due to the increase in the number of dead and the need for more balanced approaches to memorialization, the Kyiv authorities have created a special council that will search for new forms of honoring the memory of heroes.
According to Mukha, traditional methods, such as installing memorial signs and naming streets, no longer meet the challenges of the time. As the death toll continues to rise, the city authorities are looking for other ways to pay tribute to the heroes without harming the families or causing conflict.
The city authorities promise not to postpone the issue of memorialization until the end of the war, but no specific plans have been announced yet. For now, the city will focus on more thoughtful forms of memorialization that will take into account all aspects of this difficult situation.
