Famous Ukrainian folk singer Katya Chili (Katerina Bogolyubova) came into the spotlight after expressing her disagreement with the installation of a Hanukkah lamp (menorah) in the center of Kyiv. In her Facebook post, the singer stated that in the conditions of war and the struggle for Ukraine's independence, the center of the capital should have a symbol of Ukrainian Christmas, and not symbols of other nations, writes WomanEL.
In the center of the capital of Ukraine, during the war for Ukraine, a symbol of Ukrainian Christmas should be installed. Not symbols of other peoples. And not symbols from another culture. Our respect should be first of all to our land, our people and our traditions that protect our state,

Later, the singer added clarification in the comments, noting that colonial powers usually install their symbols in occupied lands, hinting that the installation of Hanukkah in Kyiv is a manifestation of colonialism. Her publication quickly gained popularity and caused heated discussions.
Some social media users condemned Katya Chili for xenophobia and anti-Semitism, noting that her words could contribute to inciting hatred. They also wondered what exactly the singer meant by the “Ukrainian symbol of Christmas” and what ethnicity Jesus Christ was.
At the same time, there were those who supported her opinion, believing that in times of war it is necessary to put symbols that reflect Ukrainian traditions in the first place. The Jews themselves joined the discussion, expressing their resentment at such a message from the singer.

It should be noted that Hanukkah is a holiday celebrated in the Jewish tradition, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness and celebrated in memory of the cleansing of the Jerusalem Temple. The Hanukkah lamp has nine candles, one of which is lit each day of the holiday.
