After studying at the New York University Film School, he moved to Los Angeles, where he began working with such legends as Robert Zemeckis and David O. Russell. It was his collaboration with Russell that became a turning point in his career: Baena co-wrote several scripts, including the film Heartbreakers/The Conspiracy (2004).
As a director, Jeff made his debut with the film If Your Girlfriend Is a Zombie, which was followed by other notable works such as The Little Clock, Turn Me Around, Joshi, and the TV series Coup d'Eau. In 2020, Baena released the film Horsewomen, co-written with actress Alison Brie.
