Does lavender oil act as a weed killer?
The answer is yes, but with some reservations. One study published by Inderscience states, “Essential oils may be useful as potential bioherbicides as an alternative to chemical treatment.” The scientists involved in this study concluded that essential oils could be an effective and sustainable means of weed control. Although, they acknowledge that more field research is needed.
Meanwhile, a 2020 Greek study confirmed this finding by examining the phytotoxicity (toxicity to plants) of lavender and other essential oils. They determined that lavender oil helped significantly reduce the germination and root growth of foxtail weeds.
However, it is important to note that using this essential oil will likely not kill weeds 100%, especially on the first application, as store-bought herbicides do. But for some, the health and environmental benefits outweigh the increased effectiveness of conventional weed control products.

The Italian Journal of Agronomy found that cinnamon essential oil was superior to lavender and peppermint oils in suppressing weeds. Cinnamon oil has many uses. But its effectiveness and safety as a weed killer appears to be a game-changer for organic gardening enthusiasts.
Of course, it may not be as effective against mature, deep-rooted weeds as an herbicide purchased at store. But, if you're willing to apply multiple rounds of treatments, check your garden frequently to treat any emerging weeds.
