MadridAtlético Madrid hosted Inter Milanin the second leg of the 1/8 finals of the Champions League. However, the Spanish club very quickly responded with a goal of their own – in the 35th minute, Antoine Griezmann reacted to the rebound of the ball in someone else's penalty area and shot into Yann Sommer's goal.
In the second half, Atlético put crazy pressure on the goal of the Italian championship leader in the hope of scoring another goal and sending the game into extra time. This bore fruit in the 87th minute, when Memphis Depay took advantage of Koke's pass and sent the ball into the corner of the Milan club's goal from outside the penalty area.
So Thus, the teams waited for two extra periods of 15 minutes each, where they were unable to hit each other's goals. Consequently, the winner of the two-game confrontation was determined in a penalty shootout.
Atlético players scored three out of four penalty kicks – Depay, Rodrigo Riquelme and Angel Correa were accurate from the mark, and Saul Niguez failed to beat Sommer.
In turn, Inter players did not score any three out of five penalties, which meant defeat for them and elimination from the most prestigious European Cup. Despite the accurate shots of Hakan Calhanoglu and Francesco Acerbi, Simone Inzaghi's team was let down by Alexis Sanchez, Davy Klassen (they did not beat Atlético goalkeeper Jan Oblak) and Lautaro Martinez, who launched the ball much higher than the goal with his last shot.
