Marta beat a tennis player from the top 10 in the world ranking for the fifth time in her career.
Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk (No. 27 WTA) beat Chinese Zheng Qingwen (No. 7 WTA) in the second round of the WTA 500 tournament in Stuttgart.
The match lasted 2 hours 42 minutes and ended with the victory of the 21-year-old native of Kyiv after three sets – 6:2, 4:6, 7:5.
In the decisive third game, Kostyuk lost with a score of 4: 5. The Chinese woman had 5 match points on her serve, but the Ukrainian managed to win them all back and eventually won.
During the match, Kostyuk served through 3 times, made 8 double faults and converted 4 out of 14 break points.
“I didn’t believe that I could win this match. All the match points were incredible. Perhaps I deserved a little (victory – approx.),” Marta said in an interview on the court after the game.
For Kostyuk, this is the fifth victory in her career over a tennis player from the top 10 of the world ranking. This year, Marta did it for the second time: at a tournament in San Diego, she beat American Jessica Pegula, who was then fifth in the WTA rankings, in the semifinals.
In the quarterfinals of the competition in Stuttgart, Kostyuk’s opponent will be the American Cori Gauff, third seeded at the tournament.
