George Groves believes that the Ukrainian will be able to defeat the “Gypsy King”.
Former world champion George Groves shared his expectations for the upcoming fight between WBO, WBA, IBO and IBF world champion Oleksandr Usyk and WBC title holder Tyson Fury.
In his opinion, the Ukrainian boxer will win the fight for the title of absolute world champion, since he is significantly superior to the British in boxing abilities.
“Yes, I choose Usik in the fight against Fury. I remember when Usik just moved to the heavyweight division, I said that he was a dark horse, and we shouldn’t count this guy out.
In previous years we saw , how a heavyweight moved up to the heavyweight division and dominated. It seemed incomprehensible to many people. They said that he would never compete with Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury. I still think Usyk will beat him.
They say that a good fighter will beat a good little fighter. But I think Usyk is an exceptional fighter. If we talk about boxing abilities, Usik is much better,” Groves said in a commentary to talkSPORT Boxing.
The Usik-Fury fight will take place on May 18 in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). The fight was scheduled for February 17, however due to an injury the Briton received during one of the sparrings, it had to be postponed.
To avoid another breakdown of the fight, the organizers established sanctions that will be applied to Usik or Fury, if one of them does not enter the ring on May 18. Boxers face a huge fine if they refuse to fight on the scheduled date.
The winner of the Usyk-Fury fight will become the first absolute world champion in the world. heavyweight division in the 21st century.
The last “absolute” in the heavyweight division was Lennox Lewis, who won this status in 1999 when he defeated Evander Holyfield. The WBA, WBC and IBF belts were at stake then. recognized as equal in 2007, so the winner of the fight between Usik and Fury will become the first-ever “absolute” heavyweight champion with four major titles.
