Elina gave an emotional comment after winning the 1/8 finals of the grass major.
Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina (No. 21 WTA) cried during a flash interview after the 1/8 final match of Wimbledon 2024 with Chinese Wang Xinyu (No. 42 WTA).
To honor the memory of the victims of the massive missile attackwhich the Russian invaders inflicted on Ukraine on the morning of July 8, the 29-year-old native of Odessa played a match with a black ribbon.
Elina confidently beat the representative of the Celestial Empire in two sets (6:2, 6:1) and reached the quarterfinalsof the grass major.
After the victory, Svitolina spoke with tears in her eyes about the tragic events in Ukraine.
“Without a doubt, it was a good game. But it was a very difficult day for the Ukrainians. So yes, it was not so easy to concentrate on the game. It was very difficult to read the news in the morning, it was very difficult to go out onto the court. So I’m glad that she played and won,” said Svitolina.
Elina entered the competition for the third time in her career Wimbledon quarterfinals. Her personal record at this Grand Slam tournament is semi-finals in 2019 and 2023.
In the 1/4 finals, Svitolina will play with the fourth racket of the world, Elena Rybakina from Kazakhstan.
Elina remains the only representative Ukraine in singles Wimbledon 2024. Previously, Marta Kostyuk and Dayana Yastremskaya failed to reach the 1/8 finals.
The main draw of Wimbledon 2024 will last from July 1 to 14. Last year, Czech tennis player Marketa Vondrousova won the Grand Slam tournament. It was to her that Svitolina lost in the semi-finals, showing the best result among Ukrainians.
