Yulia Starodubtseva was eliminated in the first round earlier.
Ukrainian tennis players Elina Svitolina and Marta Kostyuk made a successful start to the Australian Open 2025, having passed the first round of the main draw of the competition.
Svitolina beat Romanian Sorana in two sets Cirstiu with a score of 6:4, 6:4. The match lasted 1 hour and 33 minutes.
Kostyuk won a strong-willed victory over Japanese Nao Hibino – 3:6, 6:3, 6:1. The match lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Svitolina’s next opponent will be American Caroline Dolehide, who beat Czech Sarah Bejlek in the first round with a score of 7:6, 6:2.
Kostyuk’s next opponent will be German Jule Niemeyer, who defeated Polish representative Maya Khvalinska (6:0, 6:1) in the first round.
It should be noted that Ukrainian Yulia Starodubtseva previously left the Australian Open. In the first round, she lost to Leyla Fernandez from Canada (5:7, 4:6).
Later, three more representatives of Ukraine will play their first round matches of the Australian Open – Daria Snigur, Dayana Yastremska and Angelina Kalinina.
The main draw matches of the Australian Open-2025 will be held from January 12 to 26. The current champion of the tournament is Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, who is playing in a neutral status due to the full-scale war of Russian occupiers against Ukraine.
Recall that in the singles tournament of the Australian Open-2024, the best result among Ukrainian tennis players was shown by Yastremska, who reached the semifinals, where she lost to Chinese Zheng Qinwen.
